DEFENSIVE COMPETITION IS PAYING OFF SAYS CYRUS

Captain David Cyrus believes the uncertainty as to who will start each week is driving his defensive colleagues to perform at their best.   Since taking up the coaching reins in late April, Andy Keogh has featured no fewer than eight different players in his back four, swapping personnel from one week to the next according to the opposition and tactics of the day.

That approach has certainly reaped rewards.   A fourteen-game unbeaten run has propelled Inglewood United to the top of the National Premier Leagues, putting the club within touching distance of the league title.   In addition to that, Inglewood are course to achieve their best defensive record in five years.

Cyrus says increased defensive depth brought on by a healthy competition for matchday places is at the heart of the team’s season.   “The fight for spots has pushed every player to perform out of their skin,” Cyrus commented.   “We have all had to be patient and work hard in training to see our name on the starting eleven for the coming Saturday.”

“Throughout the season the back four has chopped and changed with each player that’s come in understanding their role.   Alex Ishida-Livings and Connor Bécsi have been unreal in their first season in and around the first team, putting pressure on some of the more experienced lads.   They have promising futures at Inglewood and I’m looking forward to playing alongside both of them.”

Cyrus expects Inglewood’s defences will be put to the test on Saturday when they host one of his former clubs, Balcatta.   It’s been a tough few months for the Cats with seven straight losses plunging them to the foot of the ladder where they’re in a battle with Perth Glory and Mandurah City to avoid the wooden spoon.

The form guide may suggest an easy win for the home team but Cyrus says it would be dangerous for Inglewood to believe that.   “I have a lot of respect for Balcatta as a club and there is no way we will be taking things lightly on Saturday,” said Cyrus, who is really enjoying his football at the moment.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the performances we have been putting up lately, it is an absolute pleasure to be a part of such a great playing group.   Just as we have done every other Saturday, we will walk out against Balcatta with a game plan and it will be up to the boys on the park to bring home the three points.”
