Aleks Jovic commemorated his return to the line-up by finding the net as Inglewood United cast aside Subiaco AFC 3-1 under lights at Inglewood Stadium. Brian Woodall opened the account with second half finishes by Jovic, whose last Inglewood outing was nine months ago, and Jason Barrera putting the club on the verge of a Night Series semi-final appearance.
“It’s been a while since I played competitive football and I was really happy to just get 60 minutes under my belt,” commented Jovic, who broke his leg while on Perth Glory Youth duty in December 2013 and has played little football since. “And scoring a goal was a bonus for me and the team.”
“We have great depth in our squad as a few key players (Alex Dunn, David Cyrus, Adam Tong, Mark Pritchard and Ashley Rosindale) were out this week. With each game we are getting stronger and stronger as team. Our focus has now switched to getting the three points against Perth Glory next week and, hopefully, finishing first in the group.”
Woodall’s silky skills were rewarded with the opening goal after 23 minutes, the striker expertly controlling Barrera’s chipped pass and finding the net with is second touch. Subiaco responded swiftly through a long ball over the defence which caught young goalkeeper Mitch Papas in two minds as Rory Feely slotted inside the upright.
An exquisite exchange of passes led the hosts to restore their lead soon after half-time, Barrera, John Migas and Tim Gould combining to send Jovic inside the area where he calmly beat Ryan Montgomery. But the pick of the goals came close to the end when Barrera out-classed three opponents to rifle into the top corner from 18-metres.
