Inglewood United made it four wins in a row with a 2-0 defeat of three-times league champions Bayswater City on a wintery afternoon at Frank Drago Reserve. Brian Woodall and team captain David Cyrus found the back of the net to keep Inglewood locked together at the summit of the National Premier Leagues with Perth SC.
The opening exchanges may have been cagey but there was no lack of action. Ashley Rosindale jinxed his way out of midfield after 8 minutes only to drag his low shot past the upright. And ten minutes later David Heagney would have got the breakthrough had he connected with Devon Gibson’s delivery.
Woodall showed everyone how’s its done on 21 minutes by finding the narrow gap between goalkeeper and upright after Bayswater had failed to deal with Calum O’Connell’s throw. Todd Howarth curled a dead ball wide and Mark Pritchard’s effort was deflected away to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats.
Scott Blackmore was quick to get in behind and clear from on the line after David Heagney touched the ball past goalkeeper Alex Dunn. Woodall thought he had a second when his powerful strike was too hot for Fraser Greenwood to hold but the Bayswater custodian managed to grab the ball before it rolled into his net.
Cyrus strengthened Inglewood’s grip over proceedings minutes into the second with a looping header into the top corner, after getting on the end of a trademark Adam Tong long throw. And it would have been all over soon after had Greenwood not plucked the ball off Rosindale’s boot after the attacker raced away from the defence.
Inglewood spent much of the final half hour on the defensive, soaking up some intense pressure as their hosts sought to extend their unbeaten 28-game league run. But a resolute defensive line, led by Cyrus and Tong, plus a dose of luck ensured the storm was weathered and the points went home with the away team.
