Michael Garcia was always confident results would start going in his teams favour. And after guiding Inglewood United to their first win of the home and away series, Garcia has ominously warned the remainder of the National Premier Leagues field that his side is on the improve and on their way up.
Inglewood gained three points for the first time this year on Saturday, when Scott Witschge and Ryan Clarke found the net in a 2-1 win over Perth Glory. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Garcia. “We’ve played pretty well throughout the season without getting the results, against Glory we didn’t quite play as well as we have but came away with the points.”
Garcia singled out a flat opening 45 minutes when prompted as to where he felt Inglewood’s performance could have been better. “We were a bit slow coming out of the blocks. We had a few chances but couldn’t capitalise on them,” he commented. “The second half we came out with a lot more determination and intent.”
That focus was rewarded by two match-changing goals. “Scott was able to give us a bit of a breather and Clarkey got the second goal a few minutes later,” said Garcia. “Part of our problem so far this season has not being able to capitalise on our chances. Sometimes you just need things to fall your way and if we keep working at it we’ll be alright.”
“To be up there in the league you have got to be consistent in the way you perform week in, week out,” the coach added. “We know we can match it (with the better teams in the competition), but we also know we have a few deficiencies in our consistency at the moment. And when we get better at that we’ll move higher up the ladder.”
