Summer recruit John Migas is enjoying his first taste of the National Premier Leagues following a two-year absence from top flight football. An approach from Taki Nicolaidis late last year was enough to convince Migas, a former State representative, that it was time to reignite his playing career and that Inglewood United was the club to do it at.
It didn’t take a lot to convince Migas to agree and the versatile 31-year old is glad he did. Whether deployed in a midfield or defensive role, he has consistently come up with the goods for an Inglewood side that sits top of the league standings with five wins from as many starts.
“It took me a little while to get back into the swing of things but I’m really enjoying it,” Migas said of his return to top flight football. “After a year in Division One with the (Western) Knights and a year off before that, I knew it was going to be tough playing NPL. But I’ve enjoyed the challenge and feel I’m getting better each week.”
Migas, who collected league winner’s medals with Floreat Athena and Balcatta, says being part of the league’s only team with a 100% win record is a proud achievement, even if it is still early days. He attributes Inglewood’s superb start to the season to a combination of hard work, great teammates and inspired coaching.
“This has so far been the most enjoyable year of football I’ve had,” said Migas. “Winning five in a row is one thing but more important than that is that we’ve got really good team morale down at Inglewood at the moment. A lot of that does come down to Taki and (assistant coach) Saul (Contera) who have done a great job recruiting players.”
“Taki was an assistant at Floreat when I played there five years ago so I had a good idea of what he’d be like as head coach. Training has been good and the intensity fantastic, which is vital to keep our winning streak going. I don’t envy Taki and Saul come match day though, we have a lot of depth so there are some great players sitting on the bench.”
