Inglewood United will be putting their best foot forward this long weekend in the quest for writing a new chapter in the club’s history, according to Calum O’Connell. Victory away at ECU Joondalup on Saturday will keep Inglewood at the top of the National Premier Leagues while another success on Monday – at home to Floreat Athena – will book the team into the FFA Cup final.
It’s been over a decade since Inglewood’s last trophy win – in the 2005 Night Series – and O’Connell says everyone at the club is keen for that to change. “The lack of silverware obviously hurts a few people at the club, and they want that to change,” O’Connell said. “There’s no doubt that player group wants to be successful and win trophies – that’s been our priority since day one of pre-season and it hasn’t changed.”
The weekend opens with a tricky trip to the northern suburbs where Inglewood will be without suspended pair Adam Tong and Scott Blackmore. “Losing two of our starting defenders is a big hole to fill, but a slight change to the formation and we’ll be fine for the game in Joondalup,” said O’Connell.
Inglewood are back on home soil 48-hours later when they host Floreat in semi-finals of the FFA Cup. The teams have met twice already this year, Floreat claiming a 2-1 win in the Night Series before Inglewood turned the tables with a 3-0 win on day one of the league. O’Connell is tipping that another thriller will be on the cards.
“Expect an entertaining game,” he said. “Floreat have some quality all over the park and will make it hard – it’ll be a battle for the whole 90 minutes. We have worked hard to get here and are well aware that there are no second chances. Every player in an Inglewood shirt will be wanting to be a part of history for the club and get onto that national stage.”
