Gold Medal winner Alex Salmon is set to make his long-awaited return when Inglewood United hosts Sorrento in Saturday’s National Premier Leagues round. The 23-year old striker is yet to feature this year due to a seven-game suspension stemming from last year’s Major Semi-Final loss to Bayswater City.
Salmon, who also scored the 2017 Golden Boot with 29 goals in 26 appearances last year, is glad his days of watching from the sidelines are finally over. “I’m absolutely buzzing to be back.” Salmon commented. “This is the longest break I’ve had from football. It’s been frustrating as I want to be helping the team win games.”
“In terms of my fitness, I’ve been doing a lot of work on my own along with the team at training. I’m feeling good but match fitness can only come from competitive games, so I’ve got a bit more to do there. I can’t wait for Saturday, the buzz of being back playing will get me through.”
Salmon is brutally honest in his assessment of Inglewood’s performances across the opening five league games, which have produced a win and three draws. “It’s nothing more than we’ve deserved,” he said. “Other than the second half against Cockburn City and battling with ten-men at Bayswater City, we have been poor.”
“I feel we have to go to the basics of football, work hard and being hard to play against – that is what won us games last year. We reaped the rewards when we earned the right to play … nobody is going to give you anything in football no matter what level you’re playing at.”
