This weekend’s National Premier Leagues clash with Bayswater City will give defender Adam Tong and his teammates a good indication as to how they compare to the local scenes measuring stick. Bayswater have been crowned league champions three years running and currently share top spot with Inglewood United and Perth SC.
Tong, who switched from Bayswater to Inglewood over the summer, is looking forward to arguably Inglewood’s toughest game of the season so far. “Bayswater have been the best team in the league over the last five seasons,” Tong said. “And the fact they haven’t lost in twenty-eight league games shows how tough Saturday is going to be.”
“To get a result against Bayswater would be great, it would give us added self-belief that we can achieve our goal of making the top four this year. The players are excited about having the opportunity to show we’re not here to make up the numbers – we’re here to compete and to get some silverware at the end of it all.”
Tong made over a dozen appearances for Bayswater last year so it’s fair to say he has a good understanding of what makes the club tick. “To be successful on the pitch you also have to be successful off it, the management, backroom staff, supporters and players all chipping in,” he explained.
“Coyney (Bayswater coach Chris Coyne) and his backroom staff are quality, they take time to talk to each player about their roles and performances and he’ll have them fired up on Saturday. The Bayswater players believe in one another and for us to overcome that we have to work that 10% harder than them for the entire 90 minutes.”
