Grenada defender David Cyrus is raring to go after agreeing terms with Inglewood United for the winter of 2016. Cyrus, who has 16 international caps for his nation, adds depth and experience to the squad as coach Michael Garcia reinforces his defensive options in preparation for the coming season.
The 26-year old left-sided defender is relishing his latest challenge in the National Premier Leagues, following spells with Perth SC and Balcatta. “I’m really looking forward to pulling on an Inglewood United shirt,” Cyrus said. “It’s a new season, a new environment, a new club … I can’t wait to get my head down and get stuck in.”
Cyrus has been impressed with what he’s already seen of Inglewood, the defender saying the clubs’ ambition matches his own. “After meeting with the coaching and managerial staff, I knew that the club and I were on the same page,” he said. “Inglewood have big ambitions and it’s great to be a part of it.”
“Michael (Garcia) made it clear that he believed in my ability and that made my mind up to sign for Inglewood. I didn’t know much about Michael as a coach prior to signing but having met him and heard where he wants to take the club, I’m looking forward to playing under him and the coaching staff.”
Born in Huddersfield, England, Cyrus started his senior career at the age of 15 with Emley AFC. Spells with Bradford Park Avenue and Ossett Town brought him to the attention of Grenada, the birthplace of his father and for whom he debuted at the 2010 Caribbean Cup against Martinique.
The following year Cyrus joined Frickley Athletic where he featured regularly across two seasons and was a member of Grenada’s squad for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Upon moving to Western Australia he played for Fremantle Spirit before moving into the NPL with Balcatta and Perth, playing last season with the latter.
For his first season at Inglewood Cyrus is setting some modest goals. “I’m hoping to achieve at least a top four finish, with a good defensive record,” he said. “It would be nice to become the team to fear in 2016.” Cyrus will meet his new teammates when they assemble for pre-season training early in December
