Club stalwart Jason Colli is looking forward to creating history on Saturday afternoon when Inglewood United takes on Perth SC in the ‘West Australian’ Top Four Cup Grand Final. Inglewood qualified for the season finale on Wednesday evening by defeating ECU Joondalup 6-5 on penalties, after the teams were deadlocked at 3-3 following a thrilling 120 minutes.
Inglewood has made the Grand Final on seven previous occasions, only two of which have returned silverware. In 1968 Bev Allen scored twice to see off Cracovia 2-1 then nine years later it was Johnny Davidson that ensured the year ended on a high by snaring the solitary goal in a 1-0 defeat of Floreat Athena.
Colli is hoping he can help Inglewood emulate those successes and put a third Grand Final trophy in the cabinet. “As a player, these are the games you want to play in,” said Colli, who has chalked up in excess of 300 outings for the club since 2004. “All eyes will be focused on Dorrien Gardens this weekend.”
“There’s a real buzz about the club. All the boys are eager to play their part so there is competition everywhere to get in the starting eleven. Nobody is guaranteed a position. For me the game cannot come quick enough. I’m looking forward to Saturday and getting the result for the club that I have been part of for the last thirteen years.”
Colli expects Saturday’s game to be a close as the two previous meetings between the clubs. In mid-August Ashley Rosindale and Calum O’Connell were in target in a memorable 2-0 win at Dorrien Gardens with Perth taking the honours last weekend on penalties after the teams were locked together on 1-1 at the end of extra-time.
“I don’t think this weekend will be any different … it should be a great game,” the defender said. “There is plenty of quality in both teams and, as we have already seen this year, we both like to get forward and score goals. We know what to expect from Perth and I’m sure if we play to our best we will get the result we want at the end of the day.”
